If you haven't been to the Bug Zoo lately, you might not have
noticed Daidoco. Tucked away in Nootka Court (indeed, follow the
signs to the Bug Zoo) you'll find this charming little Japanese lunch
spot.
First off - it's not a sushi restaurant. They do have sushi as a
special, but it is not part of their regular menu. Rather, they
specialize in hot Japanese dishes and salads. Today, I had the scallop
and prawn stir-fry special ($7.50) a smidgen bland for my taste, it was a
pleasantly light and refreshing meal. My dinning companion, Debbie, had
the Tuna-don ($7.50). Tataki (marinated and seared) tuna, on rice
with miso soup - I was jealous. She gave me a taste and it was
delicious, I will have this dish on my next visit.
The menu is short, a special and only a handful of other dishes: the
above-mentioned tuna, a tofu (organic from Metchosin) bowl and a grilled
salmon bowl, for example. They also feature a small selection of salads
with and without fish ($2-$3) and baked goods.
Clearly a hot spot with the local office clientele, Daidoco was
bustling at lunch. The seating is limited, but the turnover quick and
take-out is available. For a quickie lunch spot, it has a remarkably
cozy atmosphere.
Daidoco is the perfect place to have a guilt-free lunch. The portions
are sensible and the approach fresh and healthy. If you're trying to eat
well, but still want to dine-out Daidoco is the perfect choice.
Daidoco is open Monday-Friday 10am-6pm
