Ferris' has enjoyed a reputation for many years as a laid back
place, with good food and consistent service. For many restaurants being
bestowed this kind of acclaim, would be enough to raise prices, cut
staff and lower food quality - but happily not Ferris'. While they might
not always be perfect, you can tell the effort is always there.
For that reason, as we drove around town, looking for a place for
brunch - we knew that we wouldn't be disappointed by Ferris'.
Seated promptly, we were quickly provided with water and had our
drink order taken. As it was a Sunday - mimosas were in order. The
server left, but then returned shortly after to clarify if we wanted
traditional mimosas or the Ferris' mimosa (with an orange vodka addition
- $4.99). I appreciated, her not making that decision for me - we
went with the house special.
Our food arrived in short order - what we expect at lunch and
breakfast. Patty ordered the falafel with yam fries ($8). All the
veggies were fresh and the falafel and the pita hot. The fries were a
smidgen overdone, but still pretty damn tasty. Not a dish that lends
itself naturally to presentation, it could have used a little something
for colour.
I had the veggie nut burger with oyster soup ($8). Perhaps the best
in town, Ferris' is the only place I order veggie burgers regularly.
While lacking a little structural integrity (all veggie burgers do), the
patty has great texture and flavour. I went for the El Paso topping
($2.25) - smoked chilli and bourbon bbq sauce, mushrooms and cheddar;
the topping was a nice addition to the regular accoutrement. The soup
was rich and flavourful, without being too fishy - I especially like the
crème fraiche garnish.
Our plates were cleared and our bill presented quickly after
finishing our meal. The whole transaction seemed remarkably efficient.
Loaded with ambiance - with old town brick work and a hoppin' patio,
the implication is pretty tight seating and sometimes rickety tables and
chairs. If Ferris' were going to make some enhancements - I'd suggest
looking at presentation at all levels. The food could stand a little
tarting up, the dishware and table settings could be a lot more
sophisticated and the booths a little less like church pews. That said -
we love Ferris' and these changes would only make us love them more.
