Le Gros - 1200 Altalake Rd., Whistler, Tel:
604-932-4611 Patty and I are suckers for
country-style French at the best of times, so combine it with reasonable
prices and Whistler and we're thrilled. Seriously the best value I've
ever experienced in Whistler, first courses between $8-10 and mains
$20-30. Very classic French, I had a foie gras terrine and rabbit
chasseur, while Patty had escargot in puff pastry and veal sweetbreads
(huge serving). The wine list similarly had a good variety of wine and
prices, including half-bottles and a 'one of a kind' list of limited
quantity bottles, of notable quality. The service was comfortable and
familiar and the owner front and centre (always a good sign). |

Quattro
- 4319 Main St, Whistler, 604-905-4844
Quattro's reputation precedes itself with two other
location in Vancouver and North Vancouver. Hearty Italian cuisine that
is perfect to aid your body's recovery after a day on the slopes. Not
cheap, there is variety on the menu to suit different appetites and
pocketbooks. I had the most amazing smoked sablefish first course, with
truffle honey and a shrimp and brandy demiglaze ($16.95) and the
Spaghetti Quattro ($20.95), which was a rustic combination of minced
chicken, black beans and a spicy seasoning. Patty had the carpaccio
($13.95), which I thought had too much aioli, but he didn't seem
bothered. Patty's main course, the pork chop in the photo ($30.95), was
huge and rich, wrapped in bacon, with a variety of winter veg. I
couldn't believe he ate it all.
The wine list is among the many award winners in
Whistler. It's a little overwhelming for the beginner, but anyone
interested in Italian wine will enjoy the read. Also of note is the
lengthy grappa selection - we had a interesting muscat grappa |
