Zambri's for Lunch

No doubt one of the best values in town, Zambri's lunch service is a no frills option, with great food.

The approach is counter service ordering and meals brought to your table. More sophisticated than a cafeteria or snack bar; just because it isn't table service, doesn't mean the atmosphere suffers.

The lunch time menu is simpler than the evening fare, but maintains the classic Italian theme. Hot sandwiches are a mainstay, such as the breaded veal cutlet sandwich I had this day ($6.50), filled with mozzarella, tomato sauce and roasted veggies. You'll also find a soup and salad of the day as well as several main dishes, usually meat with pasta or polenta. Patty's meatballs and polenta ($10.95), was fresh and traditionally prepared.

In no way will Zambri's blow your mind at lunch, but for the price, you can't beat the food.

My recommendation: The olives, I love the selection of olives and the marinade.

Dinner Review: August 3, 2005

Another delightful evening at Zambri’s. A frequent haunt of mine, Zambri's never seems to disappoint. On this particular evening my friend and frequent dinning companion Ryan, rode our bike’s downtown as to justify our indulgences. A good plan all round since any thought of good intentions were quickly abandoned.

My weakness is of course, the wine list. I was delighted to see a Selbach Riesling (Kabinett, 2003), a choice that was echoed by the sommelier (I’m a huge sucker when it comes to flattery and wine is perhaps my weakest point.) We were both entirely on the ball, it was a great starter wine and went well with our two starters – fried mozzarella with date and fig compote and an organic tomato and cucumber salad with parmesan cheese and olive oil.

I picked a Barbera Savrano to accompany our mains, which admittedly wasn’t the best choice for Ryan’s tuna, but was great with my pork shoulder – so tender, with fresh tomatoes and a subtle hint of curry, served on polenta. For dessert (because Ryan can’t resist dessert) we had a yummy Millefeuille (I forget what it’s called in Italian). Light, but creamy, it was the perfect share-sy.

The food was as always, great and simple; the wine list is always a pleasure (however, it was my impression that they’ve lightened up on the  somewhat obscure Italian’s to include some more common locals – not a bad thing, but I always enjoyed the challenge); and the service was professional with a comfortable level of familiarity.

What can I say, what the location lacks (looking into the London Drugs parking lot), the food, wine and service compensates for.

Value of Food: 8/10

Quality of Food: 9/10

Service: 8/10 (the server forgot something, but the sommelier is awesome)

Ambiance: 7/10 (if you can ignore the parking lot the interior ambiance is lovely)

Wine List: 8/10 (short, but good)
